Story time: Writing with a hashtag

“There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.”
~Ernest Hemingway

For us amateur writers, finding time to sit down and hit the keyboard demands serious efforts. It does not happen easily. There is the schedule issue, timing usually also sucks.

For me it helps to turn on the soundtrack to Blade Runner by Vangelis. It usually gets me in the right mood to write. I’m currently in the process of finding more time for writing. I’ve already started cutting down the number of volunteer work one is able to do next to full hours at my regular job.

But, as I mentioned in a September post Story time: Extending one’s comfort zone in writing, there is only time for short and mini writing competitions.

So, I have good news for you and a great tip. If you have limited time at your hands, you can get away with 140 characters a month, it’s so easy 🙂 This is not advertisement for Gotham Writers, but I really like the Twitter writing competition they have going on. The contest runs monthly and all you need to do is type a tweet long story according to the monthly theme and add the hashtag #GWstorieseverywhere. It’s as simple as that.

Here one example of a monthly theme that I came up with. Let me know what you think.

I let the dog out. A year later, he returned smelling of whiskey and cigars. He was barking in a foreign tongue. #GWstorieseverywhere ©fictivestina

I edited the blog structure, you’ll find writing prompts that I participated in under Writing prompts.

Earlier this fall, I sent the sci-fi novel I originally wrote for another competition to a second organizer. I’m currently waiting to hear from them at some point in December. Once it comes back, I’ll probably publish it online. Exciting times!

Have a good November and take care!

Hey, I'm a native Helsinkian but a cosmopolitan at heart :) Outdoors, reading, writing and cultural attractions are my passion. Hiking in Lapland cannot be competed with!
